Developing Computational Models for Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

To advance research on the mechanisms of blast-induced TBI, the PCO participated in a kickoff meeting on July 20-21, 2015, for a collaborative research project led by the Biotechnology High Performance Computing Software Applications Institute (BHSAI) and the United States Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). This project characterizes and quantifies the mechanisms that may cause blast-induced TBI. The multidisciplinary team will develop and validate a whole-body computational model that predicts the brain-tissue responses to direct and indirect mechanisms of TBI (and their combined effects) resulting from blast exposure. Other collaborating organizations include the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), University of Utah, and University of Maryland.
