Advancing Blast Injury Research to Protect and Heal Those Who Serve
Each accomplishment adds to the knowledge base for blast injury research and advances the delivery of effective strategies that prevent blast-related injury or allow injured Service Members to return to duty and maintain an active lifestyle.

Acute Treatment Accomplishments

Medical research in acute treatment improves survivability and mitigates long-term disability for Service Members with injuries following blast events. The Department of Defense (DoD) collaborates with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), academia, and the private sector to investigate new diagnostic tools, therapies for traumatic brain injury (TBI), hemorrhage control devices, strategies to mitigate wound infection, and medical interventions for facial, hearing, and visual injuries. The research community is also employing novel neuroimaging techniques, evaluating clinical data, and experimenting in the laboratory to improve treatment and injury mitigation across the spectrum of blast-related injuries. The combined efforts of this research are leading to a greater understanding of the capabilities and limitations of current technologies, new and improved tools, and validated methods for injury mitigation in the prehospital setting, and improved diagnostics and clinical guidelines for the acute treatment of blast injuries.
